Everything You Need to Know About Pin Codes in India

Postal index codes, or pin codes as they’re more commonly known in India, are an essential part of doing business here. Your pin code is how the Indian Postal Service identifies your particular location and delivers your mail to you. You can find out your pin code by looking at the bottom right corner of your letter or document that was sent via courier service to your home or office, or by logging onto the Indian postal website and searching based on your state and city name. Here’s everything you need to know about pin codes in India.

What is a pin code?

A pin code is a postcode used in India, which has been adopted worldwide. A postal code is a system of codes that are used by postal services around the world to identify individual locations and route mail. There are two types of postal codes: alpha-numeric postal codes and numeric postal codes. Alpha-numeric postal codes use alphabetic letters to represent numbers, while numeric postal codes use numbers alone to represent addresses.

Alpha-numeric postal codes have letters and numbers used together, similar to an ISBN number or a phone number. Numeric postal codes only contain numbers, typically ranging from four digits up to nine digits. Alpha-numeric codes are also referred to as a delivery point code (DPC). The first three characters of an alpha-numeric code represents a state and district within that state. The last four characters represent a particular location or address within that district.

How are pin codes used in India?

Pin codes are a system of postal codes used by the Indian Post. They are a 6 digit code that starts with the state’s abbreviation, followed by two digits for the district and two digits for the post office. The first letter of a pin code is often an R or a C. For example, if you live in Mumbai, your postal code might start with MHA (Mumbai) and end with MH 400061 (400061 being the number assigned to your postal address). If you live in Gurgaon (Haryana), your postal code might start with GUG (Gurgaon) and end with HR 122001.
A majority of the states will have their own unique set of postal codes.

What are the benefits of using a pin code?

A pin code is a system of assigning post codes, or postal codes, to postal addresses so that mail can be sorted efficiently. A pin code helps the recipient locate a specific location within the village or city. As per Indian Postal Code System, there are nine digits for an address and these numbers will be assigned based on the area of delivery. The first three digits represent the state; the second three represent the district; and last three represent the post office. An important point to note here is that even though there are nine postal codes (apart from the PIN code), they will still only cover a small geographical region. So if your house doesn’t have a PIN code but it falls under one of those districts, then you need not worry about this topic because you will receive your letter without any issue!

The post code allows for efficient distribution of mail and packages. Every time you send a letter, it needs to go through a series of sorting stations until it reaches its destination city or town. At each one, postal codes will identify which sorting office should handle each piece of mail that comes into that area. In short, when you are ordering something online and want it delivered to your home, these numbers help make sure that your package finds its way there efficiently!

How do I find out my pin code?

The Indian Postal Code is a 6 digit number, and the first two digits identify the region where the PIN code is located. The first digit indicates the region:
1 – Andaman and Nicobar Islands
2 – Lakshadweep Islands
3 – Kerala
4 – Karnataka 5 – Madhya Pradesh 6 – Maharashtra 7 – Delhi 8 – Goa 9- Gujarat 10- Haryana 11- Himachal Pradesh 12- Jammu and Kashmir 13- Punjab 14- Rajasthan 15- Tamil Nadu 16- Uttarakhand 17- West Bengal 18- Uttar Pradesh 19

For cities that come under more than one postal code, there may be a third number for smaller sections of that city. For example, Bangalore has multiple pin codes as it falls under 6 postal regions – 560001 is East, 560002 is South East, 560003 is West and so on. Each region has several zones, which also have separate pin codes.

For Delhi, a single code applies to all areas of Delhi except for New Delhi, which has its own postal code. However, if you’re sending a package or letter that is not going far and is under 10kgs (22 lbs), it can be sent without specifying a pin code as Zip Code 500001 serves as an official default for sending mail from Delhi. The process of finding your Postal Code should be similar with every city.

Conclusion
India is one of the most populous countries in the world with a population of over 1.3 billion people. With such a huge number of residents, it’s no wonder that there are so many pin codes and postal codes. The Indian government has an official list of pin codes for each state and union territory which can be found here. The code is made up to four digits and sometimes followed by two more digits which represent the region or district.

Now that you have your pin code for your state, it’s time to get started! Once you know what number your state uses, you can call any local post office or look up an online directory. Keep in mind that postal codes are specific to each region and province, so a person living near Mumbai might have a different postal code than someone living near New Delhi.
